Energy Audits & Consulting

Energy Audits
An energy audit is a very important part of understanding how your house uses and loses energy. Without the complete profile that an energy audit provides, it will be hard to know which measures are most important to complete first. There may be less-costly improvements implemented that could help you achieve more savings, like air sealing or upgrading attic insulation, rather than replacing your furnace. Our energy audits will provide you with a prioritized list of recommended improvements. We not only tell you what needs to be completed, but we can also implement the energy saving measures for you.

Our energy audits have four parts:
  1. Initial Interview - when we arrive at your home we will ask questions about the home and any specific problem areas that you have noticed.  We will also want to know how high your energy bills are during summer and winter months.  We will need copies of your most recent energy bills.
  2. The audit begins with a whole-home inspections, including outside inspection. Inside the home we will work from the attic to your basement or crawlspace.
  3. The next part of the audit is to use our thermal imaging camera and blower door test to locate further problematic areas that the first part of the audit did not catch. If you're looking for just a blower door test please see this page.
  4. We will then schedule a return visit, usually in about 2 weeks after the initial inspection to deliver our findings. During this time we will work on a report for you to keep which includes our findings, thermal imaging photos, summary of suggested improvements, and a quote for E3 to complete the suggested improvements.
During an energy inspection we will look for the following:
  • Insulation in attic, including level, grade, type and R-value
  • Proper vent and blocking in attic
  • Open chase in attic
  • Weatherstripping and insulation around attic hatch
  • Plumbing/wiring penetrations in attic and basement or crawlspace
  • Insulation in the rim and band joists of the basement or crawlspace and crawlspace/basement walls
  • Duct work seams and gaps in basement or crawlspace
  • Energy efficient exhaust fans installed and vented to the outside
  • Adequate insulation in sidewalls
  • Window, doors, and exterior wall baseboard trim inspection for air gaps
  • Building envelope
  • Location of fireplace if applicable
  • Furnace and air conditioning units
  • Outside inspection includes: gutter inspection, improper grade, dryer vent blockage, and plumbing and wiring penetrations to the outside.

Consulting Services
E3 offers energy consulting services to homeowners and business owners so that all buildings can be designed or retrofit with energy savings in mind. E3 will work with the homeowner to help identify areas of concern and ways that these issues can be resolved. We can even help customers plan for a net zero home or business. We are also available to consult with builders and other contractors on ways that energy efficiency can be implemented into any project.

For customers that have an existing home and would like to retrofit their building to become net zero we can help you plan and implement all aspects of becoming net zero. E3 would first conduct an energy audit to see what areas of the home need attention. We would then put a plan together that would help your home become zero energy which could include any or all of the following:
  • Wall insulation
  • Attic Insulation, proper vent and blocking, air sealing
  • Basement or crawlspace insulation
  • Air Sealing
  • Re-routing plumbing and wiring
  • Solar energy planning
  • Suggestions for high efficiency appliances and lighting
E3 can also assist customers looking at building a new construction net zero energy building. We can provide planning ideas and guidelines for your contractor and can help implement all necessary components to making your new home net zero. A net zero energy home may add up 5-10% to the total cost of your new construction project between upgraded insulation and solar energy. However, the average monthly savings on energy bills will outweigh the added amount to your mortgage payment. A comparative study completed by Efficiency Vermont looked at the feasibility and affordability of owning a net zero home compared to building a home to code.
